South Family Reunion 2012 (2 of 4) - The Bear Cave

July 2012.  Rachel - 3 Years old.  Joseph - 16 months.

I'm sure that my version of the Bear Cave folklore is not completely correct.  I'm hoping my dad will send me the correct story.  However, this is what I remember.  Barney South found a Bear Cave.  He told his sons, including my dad.  They went and found the bear cave.  But nobody was able to find the cave again for more than 50 years.  In 2010, my dad and brother hired a helicopter to fly around while they did geo-surveying of the area.  They found the cave via technology, then found it on foot.

My uncle Randy was the lead on the expedition today.  We met up at a clearing in the woods.

Rachel was excited to get her hands on a flashlight.

Then we enjoyed a short hike.  Doug ended up carrying Rachel most of the way into the cave.

My cousin Sean carried Joey.

Into the cave.

There were fresh bear tracks!

Here is the bear's bed.

It was a cool experience.  It would not have been as fun if we had found the bear.  Back to the car we go.
