Donuts and Caroling

One of our family's favorite holiday traditions is getting together at the Fairbanks house for the annual Donuts and Caroling Party.  Doug and Marty (Bishop Nowling) took their usual posts frying up the donuts that Kattie made earlier in the day.

I tried my hand at making icing.  It was passable.  My favorite job was holding Lincoln, Bishop and Angie's 2 month old baby boy.

The kids always have fun rough housing, playing and watching movies together.

I'm going to "pump, you up."

"Oooh, a cellphone!"

Every year different families are invited to round out the party.  Most of our guests were unable to attend at the last minute.  But the Riess family made up for it.  They are a riot and willingly jump in to help.

We prepared to take to the streets. The candles were a big hit with the kiddos.

Joseph was furious that we were strapping him in to his car seat and that he couldn't hold on to his light very well.

This was our compromise.  He really wasn't amused.

He sort of glowed in the darkenss.

What a great way to start the season!

Donut and Caroling Party

One of our neighbors hosts a donut and caroling party every year. She made 150 donuts.  She prepped 150 donuts and her house for a party while taking care of 1 year old twins and a 3 year old boy.  My hero.

Handsome donut fryers.  Of course I'm partial to the guy on the right.

Others pitched in by glazing.

Meanwhile the kids got to spend some quality time playing.

Rachel made herself at home.

She didn't even mind the rough housing.

She just leaned over if it got too close, allowing the boys to fall where they may.

Joseph loved the stairs.

Both of my kids like hats.

Remember these three from back in May?  (Ben, Claire, Joseph)

Here they are.  Together again. (Claire, Joseph, Ben)

Everybody ready to carol in the cold.

Brooklyn's nose is already red!

Rachel was excited to get out but couldn't decide whether to walk or be carried.  She had a bit of a meltdown.

She eventually gave in to a shoulder ride like her friend Eliza.

The Goodwin Gang.

I took Joseph and Rachel home at the end instead of going back to the party.  The kids had had it.

On a side note.  Doug and I were assigned the wassail.  We waited until the last minute to find a recipe and didn't have enough time to let it steep properly.  We didn't really taste it before going to the party.  From what I understand it was some of the worst stuff Doug ever tasted.  Oops.  Teach us to procrastinate.

Rachel's First Caroling

Once upon a time I kept up with my blog.  It was a simpler time.  Now I'm so far behind, and feel like there is so much to tell, that I can't do it justice.  It's a new year and I haven't even written about Thanksgiving yet.

Some of you have expressed disappointment that there hasn't been much new here.  So, in an effort to catch up, I'm just going to share our adventures in bite size pieces.

Last December, we were invited to participate in a caroling party.  We enjoyed the camaraderie of friends as we made homemade doughnuts.  Then we walked around the neighborhood delivering the goodies and singing Christmas carols.  We had a lot of fun and felt honored to be included.  This was Rachel's first caroling experience.  She liked watching the other kids and playing with new toys at the hosts' house.  We were surprised that she was still having fun at the end of the evening.  I love her cute little red nose that matches her antlers.
