Affirmations

I love the way the maid in "The Help" encourages the little girl to repeat affirmations of self-worth.  "You is kind.  You is smart.  You is important."

My plan was also inspired by this youtube video.  http://youtu.be/qR3rK0kZFkg

I have Rachel look herself in the mirror, punch her fist in the air and say, "I am beautiful!  I am capable!  I am intelligent!  I am resilient!  I am important!"

I use intelligent instead of smart because my doctor said that if a kid thinks she is "smart" she might think she shouldn't take risks.  You know... Play it safe.  Be smart.  Sometimes I have her say  "I am worthy!  I am loved! I am funny! and I take risks!"

So using short "I am" statements, what are some others that would infuse strength and confidence into Rachel's and Joseph's souls?  Ideas?  Anyone?  Anyone?

  1. Wow. You're on the ball! Meredith is so sensitive and she gets her feelings hurt so easily. I've been having her say "I'm tough" when she gets upset over something petty.

  2. Jen always has her kids say, "I can do hard things."
Another thought -- all the "Be" attributes from Pres Hinckley's famous talk?

I think it's great you do this. I constantly tell my kids things of that nature and ask if they know it's true, but having them say it is probably soooo much more powerful. Shoot, I want to start doing it myself.

Oh yeah, and the clip? Hil.ar.i.ous. I think I could watch that a million times and still be entertained.
